This film proved to be an easygoing action-thriller, even with its share of nonsensical and foolish moments—though I’ve certainly witnessed far worse. It really doesn't warrant the extremely low scores some viewers have assigned. It might not measure up to the original, mainly because of those absurd details, but as a straightforward action/thriller, it’s acceptable enough. I generally find Liam Neeson enjoyable to watch; he was good in the initial Taken film and delivers well here too. The other performers, with perhaps the exception of his wife and daughter, mostly seem present just to populate the scenes. Following a somewhat slow start that mainly establishes why they're all located in Istanbul, Bryan and his spouse are, predictably, kidnapped, and then it’s pretty much non-stop action from there on out. As others have noted, numerous illogical events occur throughout the movie. For example, grenades are tossed into the middle of Istanbul seemingly without anyone reacting. Bryan’s daughter, who has repeatedly failed her driver's license tests in America, somehow manages to drive a car with a manual transmission like an experienced stunt performer. Then there’s a violinist consistently occupying the same location? Not to mention crashing into the embassy while being shot at by the embassy marine guards and then simply remaining in the wrecked vehicle, directly in front of the embassy, while Bryan requests assistance from someone playing golf in America. It's obvious that Luc Besson didn’t prioritize realism for this movie, but that’s not unusual for him. Set aside the silliness, and you have a reasonably good action/thriller. I personally enjoyed it, and I tend to be critical of unrealistic elements in movies.
