This movie unfolds gradually, exploring themes of love, marriage, insecurity, and the allure of what seems better elsewhere. Written and directed by Sarah Polley, the story centers on Margot, a woman who appears content in her marriage but finds herself drawn to an attractive artist and rickshaw driver she meets nearby. Michelle Williams delivers an excellent performance as Margot, portraying a complex character—quietly self-assured yet insecure, yearning for something more without knowing exactly what it is. Seth Rogen plays her husband Lou in a restrained dramatic role, although his character occasionally feels underdeveloped. Luke Kirby takes on the part of Daniel, embodying a sort of male equivalent to the "manic pixie dream girl," brimming with confidence, charm, intensity, and an earthy artistic vibe. It’s never really explained how he manages to support himself driving rickshaws, though; he's more like an idealized fantasy meant to make Margot question her marriage. The film primarily focuses on Margot, who is a compelling character. She feels remarkably authentic—occasionally frustrating, well-meaning, prone to awkwardness, and generally struggling with a sense of purpose. Her relationship with Lou resonates because it depicts the everyday realities of married life, including playful routines and familiar ways of getting under each other’s skin. However, Lou's seeming obliviousness doesn’t always feel believable. Margot expresses her needs, and Lou seems unable to connect or offer comfort, which is one of the few aspects that struck me as unrealistic. It’s hard to accept that these issues would only surface after she begins considering another relationship; it feels like they should have been present all along. Another highlight of the film is Toronto itself. Polley captures the city's vibrancy and color, making it a place I'd want to visit. This isn't going to appeal to everyone. It has flaws that are hard to dismiss, and some viewers might find the subject matter off-putting. However, where it falls short intellectually, it succeeds emotionally and artistically. It’s undeniably beautiful to look at and is worth seeing if you appreciate romantic dramas. 7/10
