The family LaForche resides in an isolated Ohio town, where mother Samantha (Jessica Chastain) cares for their deaf daughter Hannah (Tova Stewart), while father Curtis (Michael Shannon) works for a local drilling company. Lately, tensions have risen as he’s been experiencing vivid and unsettling nightmares. These seem to predict a massive storm followed by something even more terrible. As these dreams grow stronger, he finds it increasingly difficult to tell what's genuine and what isn't—are they hallucinations or glimpses of an unwanted future? Initially, both he and Samantha believe this could be stress-related, so he seeks medical help, but that only leads to medication with no improvement. When the interventions fail to provide relief and he begins taking extreme measures to shield his family from the looming disaster, it becomes challenging for the audience too, to understand what’s happening within his troubled and frustrated mind. Shannon gives a compelling performance as a man struggling with mental illness; his unpredictable actions shock his family and neighbors. The reaction from their close-knit Christian community is more about protecting themselves than offering genuine assistance as the family begins to unravel. Chastain also performs well, portraying a woman who struggles to cope with her husband’s irrational behavior while simultaneously dealing with the difficulties presented by their confused child. It serves as a stark illustration of how anxiety can be damaging not only for the person experiencing it but also for those close to them who must confront the unpredictable actions they cannot control. A strong sense of desperation permeates the film, which at times becomes very intense, all while the audience remains uncertain about what’s truly happening with the threatening storm clouds. That uncertainty works effectively, creating a thoughtful and provocative drama that can be difficult to watch but ultimately rewarding.
