It’s genuinely humorous. If you anticipate something deeper than simple laughs, maybe consider why you chose to watch Tag. The casting is what makes it work. The entire cast performed well, but three actors deserve particular recognition: Jake Johnson embodies the most convincing endlessly stoned friend I've encountered since Brad Pitt in True Romance. He manages to be both familiar and wildly over-the-top, handling both aspects effortlessly. Isla Fisher’s performance can only be described as consistently hilarious. She was so intensely exaggerated that her scenes were a pleasure. She managed to portray a specific personality type everyone recognizes, then amplified it to a ridiculous degree. Her comedic work likely stood out as the best of 2018. Jeremy Renner played the detached MacGuffin with convincing sincerity, regardless of how strange his moments became. The idea that comedy is most effective when delivered seriously seems accurate, and he demonstrated this while also showing impressive timing. It’s unlikely to become a lasting cinematic achievement, but it has the potential to develop a cult following simply because the actors were exceptionally well-suited for their roles. Ultimately, Tag delivers laughs, which was both its purpose as a film and the reason for watching it. That, in my opinion, constitutes success.
