I don’t always take notice of what film reviewers say—or even pay attention to their suggestions; I used to be one myself, actually, writing for a national magazine quite some time ago — but when a movie has a Metacritic score of 40%, it usually doesn't look promising. Nevertheless, I decided to watch this one, mainly because several actors I like were in it and the script was written by the Duplass brothers. I quickly found myself laughing and feeling emotionally touched by it, and as I continued watching, I became increasingly puzzled about why so many critics had been unimpressed or even negative toward it. I thought it probably came down to the combination of comedy with more serious themes, and that most criticism likely followed the usual complaints about not knowing what kind of movie it was supposed to be. But even that didn't seem to justify such a low rating, given how smart the writing was and how good the acting was. Once the credits started, I immediately understood why: It has a happy ending... Things mostly work out well for the quirky main characters. Critics generally can’t tolerate that. When a movie deals with realism and/or some dark or somewhat gloomy topics, critics tend to be harsh unless it ends in misery, remains largely unresolved, or at least leaves things open-ended. It's almost unthinkable for them to let viewers leave feeling good; they automatically label it as 'corny'. Was the happy, slightly romantic conclusion realistic? No, but even though the movie deals with some real problems within a comedic framework, I thought the ending was perfectly in line with its overall feel. Critics often describe anything that has even a touch of romantic comedy as ‘predictable,’ but to me, there are few things more predictable than movie critics themselves. If you’re looking for a review that I think gets it right, check out Empire Magazine, which went against the grain and gave it 4 out of 5 stars.
