It's easy to picture a group of people in a small apartment in Camden, sharing marijuana and inexpensive wine, trying to figure out how to spend a lot of money on a historical drama that wouldn’t likely find an audience…and they succeeded! This movie offers a rather shallow look at the life and romance of renowned poet Sylvia Plath (played by Gwyneth Paltrow) and her husband Ted Hughes (Daniel Craig). Those with even a slight curiosity about these two important figures in English literature will probably be let down by this thin portrayal of what made their intense, self-destructive relationship function—or fail. It sometimes feels as if the actors were trying to justify taking on roles in big-budget superhero or spy movies by agreeing to appear in this badly written, though visually appealing, film to bolster their reputation as serious performers. The romantic scenes, while not explicit, feel just as lifeless as the dialogue, and even appearances from Michael Gambon and Andrew Cavill can’t help lift it beyond a slow pace. There were many actors who could have explored the people at the heart of this story more effectively, but as always, commercial success takes priority, leaving us with something ultimately disappointing.
