The film’s impact comes from its honesty; after experiencing that truth, other movies feel like an imitation. Jeb Stuart wrote and directed Switchback, which features Dennis Quaid, Danny Glover, Jared Leto, R. Lee Ermey, Ted Levine, and William Fitchner. Basil Poledouris composed the music, and Oliver Wood was responsible for the cinematography. FBI agent Frank LaCrosse, portrayed by Quaid, is pursuing a serial killer he suspects of being involved in the disappearance of his young son. Switchback falls into the familiar category of serial killer thrillers and failed to find success with audiences. It’s not poorly made, but it doesn't quite reach what it could have been. The film showcases beautiful scenery, particularly during the final section set in the Colorado mountains, though the visuals are more captivating than the storyline itself. The false leads offer enough intrigue to keep viewers engaged throughout its nearly two-hour length, although the conclusions feel either underwhelming or predictable. The performances vary; Quaid is adequate as the consistently somber main character, while Glover’s casting feels off once the plot becomes clearer. Fortunately, Leto and Ermey provide a stabilizing presence, embodying the intended thriller atmosphere effectively within their roles. It's perhaps unfortunate that this film arrived after more sophisticated and intelligent serial killer movies, which diminishes its impact. It isn’t as terrible as its box office results suggest; shortening it by 20 minutes might have made it an enjoyable diversion, but currently, it comes across as uninspired and lacking a clear sense of direction. 5/10
