Reno on Swiss Army Man

5/10 · Nov 4, 2016

My first impression was that it felt like a reimagining of 'Weekend at Bernie's', but that feeling quickly faded. This movie is rather unpleasant to watch. It’s acceptable if you view it by yourself or with very close friends, but not suitable for any wider audience. I do recognize the effort involved and certainly appreciate the originality in a Hollywood film, however, it doesn’t come across as a masterpiece or particularly enjoyable. The storyline isn't really substantial enough to sustain a ninety-minute feature; it would have worked better as a shorter piece, or the narrative needed more development. There are numerous unanswered questions about the movie. It didn't explain everything that was depicted, which is my first major criticism. The film begins with a young man who finds himself on a small island and attempts suicide, but then he abandons that plan and embarks on an odd voyage across the sea in search of land and rescue. He isn’t alone; another peculiar young man joins him. It seems to be intended as a journey of self-discovery, but how it concludes is the most important part. The two young actors performed well in their demanding roles, especially Daniel Radcliffe. The directors also deserve credit for successfully managing the project. However, the screenplay didn’t live up to my expectations. The film was unusual, but not particularly noteworthy; I think it's worth seeing once. Perhaps if some of my questions were answered, I might revise my opinion. For now, it’s an average movie. _5/10_
