Wuchak on Swept from the Sea

6/10 · Apr 11, 2026

The narrative echoes earlier tales, drawing parallels to Odysseus’s journey and encounters with Calypso and Princess Nausicaa, and it's rooted in Joseph Conrad’s “Amy Foster,” a connection that resurfaces in "Tristan + Isolde." However, the film doesn't reach the heights of “Tristan + Isolde.” The storyline feels considerably less remarkable, and I wasn't satisfied with how events unfolded later on, though the direction it takes is apparent from early on. Despite this, the Cornish settings and the atmosphere of the era are undeniably appealing. Rachel Weisz delivers a charming performance; Vincent Perez is believable in a manner reminiscent of Christopher Lambert; and Ian McKellen’s role proves to be captivating. Kathy Bates also appears as someone with paralysis. Viewers who enjoy films like “Legends of the Fall” might find something to appreciate here, though it's not quite as packed with action. "December Boys" took inspiration from this film ten years later, resulting in a better movie, in my opinion. The runtime is 1 hour and 55 minutes, and filming occurred during late summer/early fall of 1996 across ten locations in Cornwall, southwest England, as well as Keighley, which sits 212 miles northwest of London. GRADE: B-/C+
