Seen as part of the Horror-on-Sea film festival coverage in January 2026. Slice them up, dispatch them, bake them into pastries – it's Sweeney Todd! The story is familiar to most people, but this version of the Fleet Street barber feels distinct. Haunted by his parents’ deaths at the hands of a dishonest judge, Sweeney Todd joins forces with Mrs. Lovett, who has also suffered due to the same man. Terry Bird delivers an impressive performance as the main character. Rather than playing him as simply a ruthless murderer, he portrays someone acting as a vigilante, trying to right past injustices, and you can tell his conscience is bothering him. Jo Dyson is excellent as Mrs. Lovett, portraying that delicate combination of victim and vengeful schemer really well. Director Steven M. Smith easily conveys the atmosphere and spirit of 1840s London, and his creation of this world is so convincing that you’re immediately transported to that period. There's plenty of violence as one would anticipate from a Sweeney Todd movie, but it goes beyond that. This reimagining has warmth, sadness, and genuine human feeling.
