It was difficult to pinpoint exactly which actor Udo Kier’s performance evoked—Curt Jürgens or Terence Stamp—as he delivered a poignantly entertaining portrayal of "Mr. Pat." Now residing in a nursing facility after suffering a stroke, the former hairdresser and lover of life learns that his old client, “Rita Parker Sloan” (Linda Evans), has passed away and left him $25,000, with the stipulation that he style her hair for the funeral. The story then unfolds as a gently paced, often funny, and very intimate look back at their history, revealing they hadn't parted ways amicably years before. We find out this man was once a celebrated, extravagant figure with a long-term boyfriend ("David") who died of AIDS, leaving his partner of 33 years without a home or any money. Michael Urie—her grandson "Dustin"—and Jennifer Coolidge, in fine form as “Dee Dee Dale,” along with Ira Hawkins as his old friend "Eunice," all provide welcome moments of levity that prevent the lead performance from becoming overwhelming, giving the audience opportunities to pause and reflect on his frequently somber, though occasionally uplifting, life story. There are instances where Todd Stephens’ direction veers toward sentimentality, but Udo Kier's acting possesses a quality that is both moving and amusing. Seeing “Crystal Carrington” back on screen at nearly eighty years old—and hearing some colorful language from her too—is certainly enjoyable. The ending feels perfectly suited to this character who lived life on his own terms; even though it wasn’t always easy, the resolution offers a sense of justification that made me happy.
