The story follows Ben (played by Dana Andrews) as he participates in a search through the swamp for Tom Keefer (Walter Brennan), who has been living there undetected for quite some time. When his dog sees a deer at the river's edge and leaps from their boat into the Okefenokee, he ventures off into the thicket to find him. Despite warnings from his father (Walter Huston), he goes after his dog. It’s then that he runs into the man they’ve been looking for and realizes things aren't as simple as he initially believed, particularly when he later meets Keefer’s daughter, Julie (Anne Baxter), and finds himself dealing with the manipulative Dorson brothers – Ward Bond and Guinn Williams—who bear a striking resemblance to George W. Bush! There’s a sense of something being unavoidable throughout the narrative, but Brennan and Andrews have good chemistry together, as do Andrews and the somewhat dreamy-looking Baxter. Eugene Pallette's distinctive voice helps keep things progressing, with supporting performances from John Carradine and Mary Howard, contributing to an undemanding, though pleasant enough, thriller featuring beautiful visuals and actual alligators!
