The 1982 film “Swamp Thing,” directed by and written by Wes Craven, presents a live-action adaptation of the DC Comics character. The story centers on a scientist (Ray Wise) involved in a clandestine bioengineering project located within the swamps of the Southern United States; he becomes transformed into a swamp creature as a result of his own creation. Adrienne Barbeau portrays a government employee at the research facility, while Louis Jourdan takes on the role of an unscrupulous genius seeking to exploit the formula for his own purposes. Having owned the original “Swamp Thing” comics by Len Wein & Bernie Wrightson since the early 1970s, I feel this movie fails to reflect their sophisticated and somber tone. It feels overly reliant on comic book tropes and geared toward a younger audience, even though there are a few unexpected scenes with female nudity. Adrienne Barbeau was 36 years old during filming and is in good shape, but her hairstyle isn’t very appealing. Perhaps those unfamiliar with the source material might find this movie more enjoyable. It's surprising to learn that Siskel & Ebert gave it a positive review. The film has a running time of 1 hour, 33 minutes, and was filmed at Cypress Gardens in Charleston, South Carolina, as well as nearby Johns Island; however, some scenes appear to have been shot in Southern California. GRADE: C
