Barrymore gives an outstanding performance portraying the central, enigmatic composer who captivates “Trilby” (Marian Marsh), who arrives at his studio hoping for stardom and frequently experiencing headaches. It doesn’t take long before his greed becomes apparent as he callously uses her – seemingly both because of and despite his feelings for her – to achieve recognition and wealth. The narrative effectively recounts a story of ascent and decline, moving along briskly and featuring noteworthy performances from Donald Crisp as the frugal but kindhearted "Laird" and Luis Alberni in the role of his perpetually burdened violinist, "Gecko." Bramwell Fletcher’s portrayal of “Little Billee,” Trilby's genuine love interest, doesn't quite resonate as much, though this is a commendable partial adaptation of George Du Maurier's late 19th-century story concerning ambition, affection, and influence.
