This movie struck me as a deliberate and thoughtful examination of how generations shift and evolve, embracing the beauty found in transience and flaws—a concept similar to the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi. The story conveys a sense of respect for things that don’t last forever. At one point, an older character poses the question, "How will our young find someone to marry (if the railroad is not built)?" It's clear to all that the traditional village is fading away, but Kozo can’t accept this reality and leaves as a result. Yasuyo departs, bringing Machiko along with her. Eisuke, who continues to be troubled by the spirits in the tunnel—perhaps representing the past—chooses to stay, possibly because he values the custom of living with his family. It seems we in Western cultures often fail to recognize how our own society is changing. Even when considered through a modern perspective accustomed to constant stimulation, this film holds up well.
