The film presents a young woman, Danielle C. Ryan, who finds herself stranded on an alien world after a crash landing, needing to reach her injured captain, Kevin Sorbo, and find a way off the planet while contending with two kinds of humanoid dangers. "Survivor" (2014) seems to borrow elements from several earlier works—the opening scenes of “Planet of the Apes,” the feel of "The Land of the Lost" TV show (including its Sleestak creatures and cave settings), and perhaps even a touch of “The Descent.” The film’s Utah shooting locations are truly impressive, as is Danielle Ryan's appearance. However, an excessive amount of screen time is devoted to her simply traversing the scenery, while Sorbo’s character spends most of his time incapacitated with a broken leg. What really holds it back are the numerous awkward, staged shots and artificial sequences. The attempts at portraying female empowerment feel heavy-handed, such as when the protagonist effortlessly defeats six physically fit men. It just doesn't ring true. Adding to these issues is some truly weak writing; the explanation of what’s going on with the planet felt particularly disappointing. I can’t fault the performers for any shortcomings in their acting—even Weston (Blake Webb) isn’t entirely to blame—because it all comes down to a flawed script. If you're looking for a properly executed science fiction adventure on a television-style budget, "The Lost Future" from 2010 is worth watching; this one just left me feeling frustrated. The film has a running time of 1 hour and 33 minutes and was filmed in two Utah regions: southeast Utah, including St. George, Sand Hollow Reservoir, and Snow Canyon State Park; and northern Utah, encompassing Starvation State Park, Provo (to the west), South Fork Park (north of Provo).
