The premise of Surrogates (2009)—the idea of individuals experiencing life through robotic bodies—is intriguing, but the film develops it into a fairly conventional action movie. The storyline is uncomplicated and includes some unexpected turns, though it doesn’t attempt to examine the more substantial issues that could have been raised. While visually clean and with adequate special effects for the period, which give the surrogates an appropriately artificial appearance, the direction maintains a brisk tempo; however, the writing mainly serves to advance the action from one set piece to another. There are fleeting attempts at intellectual stimulation, but the film doesn't fully pursue them. Bruce Willis delivers his familiar performance as the hardened, world-weary hero, though there’s not much substance for him to develop. The other actors perform adequately, but don’t make a lasting impression. Ving Rhames contributes some gravitas to the proceedings, but the dialogue is generally functional. The musical score is standard action thriller fare, serving its purpose without being particularly noteworthy. The photography is competent and features effective action sequences, though it lacks any real originality. It's an enjoyable film, but those expecting something with the complexity of I, Robot will be disappointed; it falls short of that standard. Nevertheless, it’s a satisfactory choice if you want uncomplicated science fiction entertainment centered on action.
