I nearly choked when I read that line! This is a clever and humorous spin on Rio Bravo. James Garner delivers an excellent performance portraying a man planning to go to Australia who unexpectedly finds himself in a town populated by some of the most unusual characters imaginable inhabiting the Wild West. Instead of relying on force, Jake McCullough resolves conflicts through his intelligence. For example, when the jail lacks standard amenities, he simply paints the floor red to create the illusion of a previous escape attempt. If he wants to spend time panning for gold, he’ll just secure a prisoner to the stove. Each performer gets an opportunity to stand out. Jack Elam deserves recognition as the second-fastest gun in town—behind Jake, naturally. Joan Hackett and Harry Morgan also deserve high marks for their portrayals of a truly bizarre father-daughter duo.
