Supernova presents itself as an unrealized potential, despite having some appealing imagery. The direction feels unfocused, which seems connected to the complicated story behind its creation, and this is evident throughout. The movie moves at a sluggish pace, extending the feeling of how long it takes to finish. There were clear efforts to create suspense or intrigue, but the writing simply doesn’t provide enough substance for those elements to succeed. The narrative feels shallow, and the people in it seem like lifeless figures moving through an empty environment. It aims to combine science fiction with a psychological thriller, yet never fully embraces either genre, resulting in a strange sense of being stuck between them. However, the photography is quite good at times. Certain views of space and the sun are particularly striking, and the design of the sets had promise. The performances aren’t bad, but the actors don't have much to work with, giving the impression that they're just going through the motions. The music and sound effects didn’t make a lasting impact, which is disappointing for a science fiction film that should be utilizing audio to establish an atmosphere.
