The story behind Supernova is genuinely more captivating than the film we’re able to watch now. There were numerous changes during production—directors entering and leaving, one (Walter Hill) removing his name from the credits, significant alterations imposed by the studio, multiple endings considered, shifts in the intended themes, and a two-year delay before release. The making of Supernova was chaotic, and unfortunately, that’s evident on screen, leading some to compare Walter Hill's original version (which hasn't been seen) to “The Magnificent Ambersons” within science fiction. In the current, poorly assembled version, the plot feels like a variation on Ridley Scott’s Alien. A crew in space picks up an unexpected passenger who seems too good to be true—a decision that turns out to be problematic. It's mostly uninspired, though it’s noticeable that glimpses of a potentially excellent film exist within all the chaos and the frequent use of Robin Tunney’s appearance as a distraction. The visuals and special effects are impressive at times, creating an appealing combination of sensuality and suspense in space. James Spader delivers a performance characterized by brooding intensity and heroic vulnerability, and there are some truly remarkable deleted scenes included on the DVD. However, that potential remains unrealized; the studio should be embarrassed for what they’ve done, even if it isn't quite as terrible as many claim. It simply isn't a great film, regardless of how you look at it. 5/10
