I approached Superman with a sense of hopefulness mixed with reservation. The actors involved are talented, and honestly, no one in the cast gives a poor performance. However, the issues stem from the directorial side: James Gunn's work. He seems to be stuck making just one type of movie, repeatedly. This doesn’t feel like a fresh take on the character; it feels familiar—like his previous films, only with new outfits. In all his projects, he includes creatures that appear more like large animals than serious dangers, which takes away any feeling of dread. Instead of highlighting well-known heroes that viewers are invested in, he emphasizes obscure and lesser characters — people like Mr. Terrific or Guy Gardner — who won’t appeal to anyone beyond dedicated comic fans. This has been his style since Guardians of the Galaxy, when he initially transformed a group of relatively unknown individuals into something he could freely experiment with. It's important to recognize that there is a distinction between a director putting their own touch on a film and simply repeating themselves. Gunn falls into the latter category. Guardians of the Galaxy, The Suicide Squad, Peacemaker — they all feel like the same movie under different titles. If this approach were exceptional, then repetition might be something to appreciate. But what’s become known as the “Gunn formula” is superficial, awkward, and draining. I was hoping that after a series of mistakes by DC with their recent movies, this new version would finally offer something unique. Sadly, it doesn't.
