James Gunn’s "Superman" works primarily because it takes a straightforward, undeniably pleasant route. The movie draws significant inspiration from the 1970s Superman movies; its visual style, overall atmosphere, and even the costumes are reminiscent of that period. The central character, portrayed effectively by David Corenswet, is also refreshingly uncomplicated and grounded, prompting comparisons to Christoper Reeve’s performance in my own mind. This feels like the essence of what Superman should be: devoid of cynicism or contentious social commentary, simply a heroic figure striving to do good. It's this inherently charming character and those surrounding him that hold the film together. To be frank, while it provides entertainment, the script felt disorganized. There’s just too much happening at once; it jumps around quite a bit. However, when considered individually, many of these scenes are fun and funny. An example would be Lex Luthor receiving payback from Superman's unusual Superdog relative. "Superman" 2025 isn't flawless, but in an era marked by cynicism and division, its straightforward appeal is undeniable. It’s definitely worth seeing.
