It’s easy to overlook what computers are capable of. Following his involvement in a computer-related scheme for financial gain, Gus Gorman (played wonderfully by Richard Pryor) finds himself working for the shady, wealthy Ross Webster (Robert Vaughn). With Gorman's skills in computing, Webster intends to seize total control over the economy—but first, there’s the problem of getting rid of Superman. Richard Lester, as is now common knowledge, took over direction of *Superman II* after Richard Donner was removed. This film represents a full-fledged Richard Lester production, and right from the extended, silly opening scene, it's clear that the tone is much less serious than in the previous installments. Given Lester’s background in comedy, it shouldn't be surprising that *Superman III* feels more like a lighthearted comic book story than a dark tale of a troubled hero. This has drawn considerable criticism from some fans. It’s unfortunate because, when considered as a simple comic book romp, the film is quite enjoyable—it definitely possesses the most playful spirit. The action sequences are well-executed, including a standout moment where Clark Kent (Christopher Reeve) battles an oddly unbalanced Superman (also Reeve). The comedy works too, if you're willing to accept it for what it is. Annette O'Toole steps into the role of the primary love interest, while Margo Kidder makes only a brief appearance. Pamela Stephenson provides some eye-catching support for Vaughn’s character, and Annie Ross portrays the unpleasant sister with noticeable dental work and visible wires. Overall, *Superman III* isn't a revolutionary superhero movie, but it functions as entertainment if you can set aside the established mythology and complexities of Superman. It’s not betraying your beliefs to do so; it’s simply acknowledging that this is a different kind of film, and its only real failing is that it doesn't quite measure up to the first two. After all, *Superman IV: The Quest for Peace* was just around the corner... 6/10
