I found this for five pounds at my local supermarket, and I’m really happy that I did. This ninety-minute HBO documentary offers a gentle and affectionate exploration of various individuals across the United States who have decided to dedicate their free time to patrolling streets as "real-life superheroes." It's similar in spirit to films like Defendor, Super or Kick-Ass, but with actual people. There’s some gentle teasing – it’s almost unavoidable when you see heroes running into traffic or interviewing people in their gardens ("Get the **** off of my property!") – but overall, there's a sense of compassion for these unusual social outsiders who clearly have good intentions. The documentary mainly follows Mr. Xtreme in California (while watching Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers in his impressively decorated apartment—he calls it the XtremeCave—he excitedly shouts: "Yeah! They're gonna MORPH now!" like a five-year-old) as he attempts to recruit new members into the XJL (the Xtreme Justice League, naturally), and Master Legend in Florida, who leads Team Justice (which includes himself, Symbiote, Super Hero, and a woman whose name I can’t recall at the moment; there are many odd characters featured in this film). He's clearly interested in women and enjoys a few beers while on patrol ("I always keep beer for the night ahead in my van...Never drink to drunkenness though (gulp, gulp)... Now, if you don't mind, I need to quench my thirst in this bar..."). Throughout, it includes concerns from police and legal professionals about whether these vigilantes are actually helpful or causing harm. The film feels like it’s setting up a Louis Theroux-style cautionary tale, but thankfully that doesn’t happen. A group of four Supers (The New York Initiative, which features an openly gay hero) even engage in entrapment by trying to provoke potential attackers. ("Well, it's started to rain, so we're going home now.") The documentary maintains its upbeat tone throughout. I give it 9.5/10; it’s definitely worth the five pounds, I guarantee it.
