I’m having trouble believing what I’m looking at—a perfect score? This movie isn’t good... honestly, the technical aspects are dreadful, some of the performances fall flat, and the story leaves much to be desired; there's a lot wrong with it. However, it manages to entertain. And my rule here is that if a film can keep me engaged, then it has succeeded in its purpose. Looking back at 2018, it’s enjoyable because the title doesn’t come with any political baggage. It doesn't try to force you into an opinion or label you, and considering it was made in 1984, that kind of pressure wasn't really a thing. And Helen Slater usually seems rather subdued; she occasionally has moments where she truly stands out, but I wouldn’t automatically pick her for a superhero role. That said, she does portray “heroism” effectively, so despite her generally understated presence, she manages to be imposing when necessary, which helps you put aside your doubts and get absorbed in the movie. It's difficult to fully invest in it, though. There’s just enough cheap production value to make it amusing, and plenty of sheer awfulness to appreciate the film for what it is. That’s not necessarily a bad thing—it can provide enjoyable entertainment even if it isn't a well-made movie. The film’s biggest flaw is its overabundance of early 80s style, but that same quality is also what makes it so fun. It has the vibe of *Footloose* or *Karate Kid* throughout. It's too early to be fully defined by the Reagan era, yet not too early to showcase a collision between mainstream American values and emerging New Wave culture, which creates an interesting dynamic—even if that entertainment is of questionable quality. You won’t consider this a great film, but it will entertain you. It’s worth seeing, unless you have to spend money on it; that is, unless you experience a wave of nostalgia.
