The central idea behind Supercool revolves around the notion that making a wish at 11:11 will magically make it happen. I honestly felt throughout the entire run time of 1 hour, 31 minutes, and 54 seconds that this movie should never have been created. The film begins with a man wearing a hockey mask unleashing a machine gun on a school bus; we later discover this is the protagonist’s daydream, though it's still deeply unsettling. It seems the director, Teppo Airaksinen, continues to think projectile vomiting is humorous (a note to him: it isn’t funny, and never has been). Neil’s wish transforms him into a more traditionally handsome young man, which allows the movie to recycle that worn-out plot device where he needs to convince his best friend it's still him by answering personal questions. It’s pretty dull. Airaksinen also employs a gimmick similar to what was done in Quantum Leap: Jake Short portrays Neil consistently, except when he looks into a mirror, at which point both he and the audience see Josh Cranston’s face. Just picture if Tom Hanks only appeared in Big whenever David Moscow, as a child, looked at his reflection; that should give you an idea of how nonsensical Supercool truly is. What's strange is that Neil doesn't ask for a complete physical transformation; instead, he wishes for "a second chance with Summer," the girl he’s so infatuated with that he apparently can’t resist vomiting in her presence. This might be the most naive take on the “be careful what you wish for” theme I’ve ever encountered. Neil predictably discovers that appearances aren't everything, or something like that. What he doesn’t seem to grasp is that his sexually suggestive drawings of Summer are just as problematic as his fantasy about shooting up a school bus – though she doesn’t appear to mind either way. Perhaps Summer should wish for a do-over herself.
