SierraKiloBravo on Super Size Me

_Super Size Me_, released in 2004, initially gained popularity because of its uncomplicated premise and its examination of the fast food industry, particularly McDonald's. Here’s what the filmmakers had to say about it: Morgan Spurlock undertook an experiment where he ate only McDonald's food three times daily for thirty days without exercising, intending to demonstrate a reason behind widespread obesity in America. He received comprehensive medical evaluations from three physicians throughout the process, monitoring his physical condition and reaching a disturbing final assessment. The documentary follows a direct format; Spurlock films himself consuming McDonald’s meals while incorporating visits with doctors, details about the fast food industry and McDonald's as an organization, and discussions with various health experts. A particularly memorable segment involved a visit to a school where he highlighted the quality of the lunches served, and the reactions of the school staff were noteworthy. One attempted to dismiss it with humor, while another kitchen worker seemed accustomed to preparing these meals for students. She even commented that “the tool we use most in this kitchen is a box cutter to open all this stuff up.” Spurlock then contrasted this with another school providing nutritious lunches at roughly the same cost, demonstrating its feasibility. Throughout the film, Spurlock avoids injecting his own opinions, instead letting the presented information make its point. The physical changes he experienced due to his diet were quite alarming. It’s not a rigorous scientific study, but it effectively illustrates the impact of consistent fast food consumption on one's body. Consequently, it serves as a helpful reminder of facts we already possess; in fact, we knew this even then, and unfortunately, junk food intake doesn’t appear to be decreasing. I found rewatching this film enjoyable, and I believe it is worthwhile if some time has passed since you last saw it. With a sequel now available, perhaps revisiting the original would be timely.
