I often find myself drawn to films that aren't mainstream, and it’s turned out that *Super 8* has become one of my all-time favorites. Seriously. It blends different styles together: science fiction is central, there’s a coming-of-age element, and it incorporates a movie-making story within the larger narrative – does it cover everything? I've watched this film at least three times, and I expect I will again. It brings to mind *Monsters*, another understated sci-fi/monster film that I appreciate greatly. The sequence involving the train, roughly twenty minutes in, is genuinely spectacular; so much so that I worry most films couldn’t maintain momentum afterward. Typically, a scene of that magnitude would be reserved for the climax, but the story needed it to happen where it did. Even though the intensity decreases somewhat after that point, the film focuses on developing the plot and fleshing out the characters. I believe the young actors are excellent, although I might be in a small group who feels that way. But you should make your own assessment, and avoid holding them to an impossibly high standard compared to adult performers. They’re clever and funny at times, but they also display genuine childlike behavior instead of acting like smaller versions of adults delivering grown-up dialogue. I chose to say “favorite movie,” not "best," because I know there are probably hundreds of films that are technically better made than this one. However, I can't imagine wanting to rewatch many others as often as I’ve watched *Super 8*.
