Musicals have become such a trial lately. Watching something like this makes me think of a bygone era, almost as if it exists in some futuristic setting. The hope of seeing movies comparable to 'Dancer in the Dark' or 'The Phantom of the Opera' seems increasingly distant. It might have worked better as a straightforward drama-romance, possibly. While the acting was decent and the music pleasant, they didn’t manage to improve my enjoyment, at least not for me. The film is adapted from a stage musical with the same title. It did reasonably well in England's cinemas but less so internationally. The story revolves around two young soldiers returning home after serving in Afghanistan and attempting to readjust to their lives. Relationship problems, family difficulties, and pursuing job opportunities overseas all become part of the narrative, and resolving these issues leads to the movie’s conclusion. Even though it turned out as I anticipated, I didn't find the film entirely unpleasant. Perhaps the setting—the capital of Scotland—and the understated presentation with a measured rhythm helped. The performances from the main actors were also quite good. As mentioned, it deals with familiar situations among a group of people who know each other but come from different backgrounds and have varying aspirations. How these conflicting viewpoints push them apart and then bring them together was handled adequately. 6/10
