A young man with aspirations of playing professional baseball finds himself working for a team in Chatham while navigating a budding romance. His girlfriend, however, faces pressure from her father—played by Bruce Davison—to relocate to San Francisco and pursue a career. Brian Dennehy portrays the demanding coach, and Matthew Lillard, Brittany Murphy, Corey Pearson, and Wilmer Valderrama form part of the youthful ensemble cast. Fred Ward and Jason Gedrick appear as the protagonist’s father and brother, respectively. "Summer Catch," released in 2001, feels a lot like "Youngblood," "Varsity Blues," and "The Program," but reimagined through a baseball lens. While it doesn't quite reach the heights of "Varsity Blues," I would say it’s better than “The Program.” It follows a familiar path at times, yet everything comes together remarkably well for an enjoyable story about growing up: the actors, the plot, the performances, the settings, the visuals and the soundtrack all work in harmony. Jessica Biel is particularly strong in several key moments that highlight her character’s femininity, and Beverly D'Angelo manages to be captivating even at 49 years old in a smaller part; Brittany Murphy also impresses. I honestly don't understand why "Summer Catch" has received so much criticism. The movie clocks in at 108 minutes and was filmed in Southport, North Carolina. GRADE: B
