The movie faithfully portrays what occurred, even though it doesn't stand out as particularly memorable for anyone involved. On January 15, 2009, people around the world watched in amazement and happiness when a commercial airliner, after striking birds and losing both engines, managed to avoid disaster and land safely on the Hudson River in New York. Pilot Chelsey Sullenberger received widespread praise for his incredible feat, having saved everyone aboard and limited the damage to property. In reality, the experienced pilot largely disregarded instructions from air traffic control, relying instead on his instincts and experience to make the correct decision. It’s not surprising that this event was adapted for film. Clint Eastwood has directed more significant works in his career, but he's capable here, and the movie respectfully depicts what happened that day. However, the film lacks suspense and excitement; most of the action unfolds after the accident during the lengthy investigation where authorities attempted to determine the cause and assess any responsibility on the part of the pilots. Tom Hanks is an actor you can generally rely on. Regardless of his projects, he consistently delivers a strong performance. This movie was no different, with Hanks giving a solid portrayal and successfully capturing the real person’s voice, gestures, and mannerisms. Aaron Eckhart also stepped up, bringing a touch of understated humor to his role that worked well and provided good support for Hanks. Beyond those two, there's not much else to commend in the cast. Laura Linney did what she could with her part, but she lacked sufficient material or importance to truly shine. The investigators who examined the incident, however, are the film’s most thankless and poorly developed characters because they seem to be portrayed negatively for dramatic effect. The movie is technically sound overall. There are noticeable historical inaccuracies that observant viewers will pick up on, like the deciduous trees being green despite the winter setting, and the fact that no one aboard the plane appears to be breathing visibly. The scenes involving the airplane were very well executed, and the CGI was impressive. The cinematography is good, making effective use of New York’s scenery and the Hudson River, and the locations were chosen and used appropriately. The musical score is fairly forgettable and unremarkable.
