It’s encouraging to see what can be achieved when talented female actors are paired with a well-developed story and a distinctive directorial vision—Sarah Gavron's approach really brings this historical setting to life. Drawing inspiration from Meryl Streep’s portrayal of Emmeline Pankhurst, the film tells the story of women who felt they could no longer tolerate being treated unfairly due to their gender, and who risked everything in a campaign of nonviolent protest. Carey Mulligan plays "Maud," whose husband, “Sonny” (Ben Whishaw), is kind but somewhat powerless. When she aligns herself with what he considers agitators, he forces her out of their home and prevents her from seeing their child. She then has to find lodging with other women who share her beliefs and fight for their right to vote. The film does tend to be lengthy; the dialogue occasionally feels forced, as we can often understand what's happening and connect emotionally without needing constant explanation. Nevertheless, it’s a powerful combination of drama and historical accuracy that shows how many different elements shaped politics at the time. It’s important to note that opposition to women’s suffrage wasn’t limited to men—some women also believed that these “radical” actions were inappropriate and disruptive. The film is visually appealing, with meticulous attention to detail and costumes creating a sense of authenticity (and sometimes an amusing formality). While I'm not usually fond of subjective camera work, it does create a feeling of closeness as we’re drawn into the action. It should be mentioned that this movie primarily focuses on the beginning stages of the fight for liberation—not in terms of imprisonment, but rather as a revolt against gender-based inequality, religious prejudice, and sexual limitations, issues that persist even a century later. There are moments where it leans toward melodrama, but performances from Anne-Marie Duff and Helena Bonham Carter, though perhaps slightly exaggerated, contribute to an engaging and believable drama that is both entertaining and educational.
