The Coens possess a remarkable skill for crafting political satire or films with pointed social commentary and integrating those elements seamlessly into the narrative—to the point where you might not even concur with their viewpoint, but it doesn't matter because they’ve still delivered an engaging story, and that storytelling always takes precedence. However, when George Clooney assumes directorial control, all of the Coens' talent for weaving a sophisticated tale disappears. The outcome is simply dull. Clooney prioritized the political aspects over the narrative, and it shows plainly. The film felt like a sermonizing lecture; it was self-important and lacked entertainment value. This is what occurs when you have an excellent script with a clear political message but choose to emphasize that message overtly, pushing it forward at the cost of simply telling a story. If the Coens had directed this themselves, they could’ve conveyed the same concept without making it feel so heavy-handed.
