The opening felt like watching the credits roll, which might have been preferable. Just five minutes of music and promotion for the book would have served the story much better. In the initial scene, the lead actress speaks her lines softly to a supporting actor who is also difficult to hear. I understand that people don’t always speak loudly and clearly in real life, but perhaps actors should. I'm usually happy to accept things on face value, even for more outlandish stories than this one. The subsequent scene features a French captain addressing his crew with a thick accent, yet the words sound as if an American is speaking them. That’s probably what occurred. At least the audience can understand him; however, it doesn't advance the plot or develop any of the characters and does nothing to engage the viewer. Then there’s something odd: a man who appears injured is in distress somewhere in a developing nation. What’s he doing there? Don’t worry, the next abrupt shift in time and place will provide more information than you need. Seriously. The camera focuses on actors' faces during dialogue as if following instructions from a manual. That wasn’t a good choice. The European performers aren't exactly striking; if you have the budget to film something like this, why not use interesting camera angles and showcase the acting abilities of whoever you cast instead of cutting every few seconds?
