It feels like coming-of-age movies with LGBTQ+ themes have been everywhere lately, and writer-director Mariano Biasin’s latest film joins that crowded field. It centers on a teenage boy who finds himself developing intense feelings for a childhood friend. The situation becomes more complex because they're also in a band together, spending considerable time in each other's company, which only intensifies the young man's growing fascination. Things get even harder when his friend begins talking about his romantic experiences with girls, triggering quiet moments of jealousy and adding stress to their long friendship. Aside from the music aspect, though, the story doesn’t feel particularly fresh within LGBTQ+ cinema. The beginning is especially problematic; it comes across as a collection of disconnected images rather than a clear storyline—it almost seems like “Cryptic” or "Vague" would have been more fitting titles. There's also a heavy focus on musical performances, which are generally okay, although there are many of them, likely because the director has experience in music videos. However, combined with the screenplay’s tendency to repeat itself, this contributes to an increasingly slow and drawn-out film that leaves you hoping for a quicker resolution. Ultimately, “Sublime” would benefit from some revisions and more creativity to make it a truly satisfying watch, particularly when compared to other stronger films in both gay cinema and music videos. It’s probably best to seek out those alternatives instead.
