Matthew Needham portrays a young man who works as a typesetter and lives with his father, and he's been communicating online for half a year with someone named "Ellie," played by Chloe Pirrie. The question arises: why tell this story? Because the character struggles with a stutter, making it incredibly difficult to communicate in a fast-paced world. Aside from his dad, he doesn’t talk to anyone, sometimes even acting as though he can't speak at all. When “Ellie” says she’s traveling to London and wants to meet him, he finds himself in a predicament. Their online conversations haven’t revealed his speech impediment, so he has to decide whether to agree to the meeting and risk letting her down or make up an excuse. However, it's possible that she might have things she’s keeping hidden too. Will he be able to muster the bravery needed? I experienced this as a genuinely moving look at what life is like for someone who can’t easily use one of our most fundamental forms of communication. It’s unsettling to consider how much we rely on being able to speak, whether in person or over the phone, and the impact that losing that ability could have on someone's self-assurance, potentially leading to a sense of looking inward and even feeling sorry for himself, as he describes. The conclusion didn’t entirely resonate with me, but the subject matter is handled here in an interesting and personal way, making it definitely worth your time.
