The Foo Fighters work well on screen, even portraying fictionalized versions of themselves, and they are clearly talented musicians. Fans of the band won't have to worry about them abandoning music anytime soon, because Studio 666 doesn’t suggest that’s going to happen. The movie seems to be aiming for a similar level of recognition as a classic like Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park, but I suspect it’s more likely to inspire something far darker – honestly, I'd rather injure myself severely than have to watch it again. It’s disappointing because Studio 666 had the opportunity to be closer in tone to This is Spinal Tap than Phantom of the Park. Spinal Tap is a comedy centered around a rock band on tour; Studio 666 could have shown us what it's like to make an album – and, much like a broken clock that’s right twice a day, there are moments when it gets something correct (the scene where Dave Grohl "discovers" a new musical note he calls “L sharp” has a quality reminiscent of Nigel Tufnel saying “D minor is really the saddest of all keys”), but these instances are rare enough to make the whole experience even more irritating. It's certainly possible to create an intelligent and funny film about recording music; 2014’s Frank serves as a good example, especially because that movie, despite being unconventional, doesn’t feel compelled to try things outside of its own scope. In contrast, Studio 666 has this cheesy horror element that feels just as out of place in a Foo Fighters film as a song from Grohl's heavy metal project Probot would on a Foo Fighters album. We enjoy the Foo Fighters in the same way we like Eminem – but then, we probably wouldn’t appreciate Eminem so much if 8 Mile had been a supernatural slasher instead of a semi-autobiographical story. I’m not saying Studio 666 should have become a drama; I'm just suggesting that it would have benefited, even as a comedy, from being more realistic. Grohl’s outbursts would be much funnier if they came from his intense desire to create a flawless record, rather than him supposedly being possessed by an evil spirit or something similar. It’s almost like he's so concerned about protecting his image that he feels the need to explain any unusual behavior with a "the devil made me do it" excuse.
