This film works well for children and has an unusual effect on adults – it can make them feel like they’re overstaying their welcome. It's similar to experiencing a modern-day fairy tale or fable. That’s really the best way I can describe it: a story about a family that chooses to adopt a little white mouse who is an orphan, after visiting an orphanage. The cat in the house isn’t happy about this new arrangement and becomes hostile toward the mouse. I first saw this movie when I was younger, at the cinema, and enjoyed it quite a bit. Revisiting it now, as an adult, gave me a slightly different impression. While the film is straightforward, the director seemed to grasp the simple charm of the story, but didn’t manage to tone down the sweetness. There are moments where it feels overly saccharine, which can make adults feel out of place. I experienced that myself, and that was my biggest issue with the movie – something most children likely wouldn't notice. While Stuart is undeniably a charming character, opinions about his adoptive family might be more divided. The characters aren’t as fully realized as they could have been, even considering it’s aimed at a younger audience. Geena Davis and Hugh Laurie both deliver solid performances, and Jonathan Lipnicki isn’t far behind, bringing an appealing genuineness to his role. Still, you can't help but wonder what the actors might have accomplished with stronger material. The voice acting is also quite good; Michael J. Fox and Nathan Lane are particularly noteworthy. The CGI animation used for the animals and their expressions deserves recognition. The effects are well-executed, showing a clear investment in the film’s production. Of course, it's hard to buy the idea of a tiny house, like a toy, located in Central Park—a very expensive piece of real estate—but that’s just a minor detail. The familiar sets and costumes, which evoke the 1950s, were also a nice touch, and the music complements the film well.
