It's difficult to imagine two performers having a stronger connection onscreen than Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell; their chemistry is undeniable. This film, once more guided by Frank Borzage’s distinctive and visually appealing direction, finds Gaynor’s character, "Angela," running from a previous life and working with a circus to avoid legal trouble. She encounters the attractive painter, "Gino" (Farrell), and things seem promising—until she falls and injures her ankle. Their journey then takes them to Naples, where he seeks employment. However, her past reappears, leading to her imprisonment. Naturally, “Gino” was completely unaware of her history or her situation, so their subsequent reunion is, to put it mildly, uncomfortable! It's a beautiful film to experience, presenting a narrative filled with hope and disappointment, happiness and aggravation as their love attempts to overcome considerable obstacles. For those seeking some of the finest examples of silent films, this one is hard to surpass—and Gaynor was even awarded one of the initial Oscars for her performance.
