This movie is truly dreadful, although Doug’s final scene had me laughing out loud! *Strays* remains a bad film. It brings to mind *Sausage Party*, because it relies on tasteless, crude humor in an attempt to be amusing. At least that 2016 animated film deals with food, so it manages to entertain more than it should (even though it’s not particularly good). This one, considering its subject matter—dogs—and the way it's presented as live-action, is simply unsettling. Beyond that, it's just incredibly dull and uninspired. Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx attempt to improve things with their voice performances, but most of the other cast members are pretty bad, unfortunately. I’m not sure how they convinced Brett Gelman to participate in his scene, though! It was a surprise to see Phil Lord and Christopher Miller listed as producers—I expect better from them, even from Louis Leterrier. I really didn't like this film; I won't deny it. The scene I mentioned earlier, along with one or two other slightly ‘OK’ moments, and the fact that the effects for the dogs are actually quite good, are what prevent me from giving it an even lower rating—I’m probably being too kind. These kinds of wacky movies aimed at adults can work, but you have to be more inventive than this; crude jokes about sex and bodily functions only get you so far.
