I’m typically not fond of Will Ferrell, particularly when he's carrying a movie; I often find his performances grating and exaggerated, seeming to solicit laughs rather than earning them. It looks like director Marc Forster kept him under control, and the result is wonderful. It's genuinely amusing and unusual, laugh-out-loud funny, and seems geared toward viewers who ponder whether fictional characters might actually exist. The story is inventive and appeals to those who’ve perhaps felt a pang of guilt for abandoning a book with its characters in peril, as if they could be trapped within the narrative. It resonates with anyone who's ever written fiction and experienced that feeling of power over their creations—and it conveys this concept through sheer absurdity.
