Wuchak on Stranger in Our House

7/10 · Feb 28, 2022

A young relative who lost her parents arrives to live with an affluent family on a ranch in Southern California. The teenage daughter (Linda Blair) begins to sense something unsettling about this newcomer. Chaos follows. "Summer of Fear," also known as “Stranger in Our House,” appeared in 1978 and combines drama, thriller, and horror elements. Despite being made for television, it was directed by Wes Craven and features an appealing performance from Blair, who was eighteen years old during filming in 1977. The storyline shares similarities with the later film “Poison Ivy” (1992), but incorporates a witchcraft theme. During the 1970s, movies of this kind benefited from a restrained style; when supernatural occurrences finally surface, they are genuinely surprising because viewers have been accustomed to fairly ordinary domestic conflicts beforehand. The original "Carrie," released in 1976, serves as an illustration—its telekinetic powers are far more exaggerated in the 2013 remake, almost to the point of ridicule. Fran Drescher appears in a minor part early in her career; she was twenty years old when the film was shot. The movie’s length is approximately one hour and thirty-nine minutes, and it was filmed at Hidden Hills, California, located roughly twenty miles west of Hollywood and just north of the Santa Monica Mountains.
