This feels like a surprisingly good Disney film considering its release year. While there's certainly some of the expected progressive themes included, thankfully it avoids the heavy-handed lecturing that’s become common in recent Disney productions. It’s fortunate that this is an entirely new story with fresh characters, so they didn't have to alter any beloved older films. Setting aside those elements, the plot and the people within it are reasonably good. They aren’t particularly memorable, but they get the job done. Jaeger stands out as a favorite; I appreciated him despite his occasional naivete. Searcher and his son Ethan feel more generic—one wants nothing more than to farm, while the other serves as the predictable progressive character in this film. What elevates the movie slightly beyond being simply unremarkable is the truly stunning visuals. The world itself is wonderfully bizarre. It's simultaneously strange, unsettling, gorgeous, and frightening. Splat, the creature Ethan eventually befriends, provides a welcome bit of humor. It’s disappointing that they couldn't come up with a more satisfying conclusion. Considering the nature of this unusual setting, it seems there would have been numerous alternative ways to obtain energy instead of essentially conceding defeat. If the intention was to convey some kind of environmental message, it fell flat. Overall, it's an acceptable movie, and I did find myself enjoying it.
