A woman sprints through a field, blood spurting from her ear, pursued by a man wielding a rifle. The story of how this situation unfolded is revealed over ninety minutes, divided into six chapters and an epilogue—though the events aren’t presented chronologically, and what we're seeing isn't the conclusion to anything. It feels more like the end of something just starting. Willa Fitzgerald conveys genuine fear, while Kyle Gallner embodies menace; however, as this chase plays out, our assumptions about how things will proceed are significantly disrupted, which creates danger for almost everyone these characters encounter—and a surprising number of uses for handcuffs are shown, none of them what you might anticipate. The underlying circumstances become clear relatively quickly, particularly given that the opening credits disclose its historical basis, which does lessen the suspense somewhat. Despite this, there's an undercurrent of subtle sensuality throughout the drama, and the actors have a compelling rapport—something else, like much of the film, encourages us to question conventional ideas about sexuality. It contains moments of violence and bloodshed, reminiscent of Hammer films rather than Tarantino’s work, and maintains a playful tone for a good portion of its runtime. If you have an opportunity to watch it on the big screen, I suggest doing so—it almost certainly won't unfold as predicted. (It was apparently filmed using 35mm film, though I didn't really pick up on that!)
