It’s unclear how much direction Jonathan Demme provided, as David Byrne and Talking Heads deliver an exceptionally creative and enjoyable performance. The movie documents their concert—compiled from shows over three evenings in a small Hollywood theater—and the venue is ideal for highlighting their artistry. The stage's dimensions permit the band to enter for each song, allowing the camera work to get up close with the musicians as they perform selections from their catalog in a distinctive manner that blends intensity and entertainment, humor and surrealism. The sound quality is remarkably high, and the intimate, intense cinematography makes the film captivating. While I'm not typically a devoted fan of this group, the movie is genuinely good and merits seeing on the big screen—primarily for its audio.
