We’re all mad, Dr. Newgate. Some just aren't willing to acknowledge it. Stonehearst Asylum (also known as Eliza Graves) comes from director Brad Anderson and features a script by Joe Gangemi. The film draws inspiration from an Edgar Allan Poe short story and includes performances from Kate Beckinsale, Jim Sturgess, David Thewlis, Ben Kingsley, Michael Caine, Jason Flemyng, and Brendan Gleeson. John Debney composed the music, with cinematography by Thomas Yatsko. Stonehearst Asylum – Can you believe what you’re seeing? For his most recent venture into horror and mystery, director Anderson delivers a film that steps outside of typical formulas. The unsettling aspect isn't about jump scares; it’s the unclear distinction between sanity and madness, and there are surprising moments of dark humor to be found as well. It doesn’t take a genius to understand what's happening at Stonehearst relatively early on—the filmmakers offer enough hints—but as the disturbing procedures become apparent, along with pointed commentary about mental health care, a compelling mystery unfolds. As you might expect, this is a story populated by bizarre, captivating, and frightening characters, which brings with it both harshness and gentleness. The main players feel very much like they belong in a Poe story, all beautifully presented within the Gothic setting (the art direction is exceptional), while Yatsko’s photography is beautiful or stark as needed. The acting is excellent; the cast provides just the right mix of theatricality and heartfelt performances. Though initially criticized by many reviewers, it has since earned a dedicated following, with recommendations from those who've seen it preparing new viewers for its particular atmosphere. 7/10
