Peter McGinn on Stockholm

8/10 · Aug 29, 2020

My spouse and I found this film enjoyable. I was somewhat taken aback by how similar the storyline turned out to be compared to what I had read about the actual events. The pacing felt appropriate enough that the unfolding hostage scenario seemed plausible. From a preview, I anticipated more comedic elements, but some of it was understated—perhaps too much so for certain critics, I imagine. The film's musical score primarily features Dylan songs that were unfamiliar to me. It’s clear they understood the need to keep the movie fairly brief, clocking in at roughly 90 minutes; they weren’t attempting something on the scale of Gone with the Wind. I also appreciated that they avoided relying on flashbacks as a standard storytelling device. Any necessary background information was conveyed through conversations between the characters. Overall, it's a decent film. I wouldn't actively seek to watch it again, but I don't consider the time spent viewing it to have been unproductive.
