Alice, a celebrated linguist in her fifties, finds herself enjoying what appears to be a fulfilling existence—a marriage, three adult children, and the prospect of becoming a grandmother. However, unsettling signs begin to emerge: moments of forgetfulness, like ascending stairs only to lose track of why she started climbing. Her ability to recall information for lectures diminishes, sometimes leaving her unsure of the subject matter altogether. These aren't instances of total memory loss but cause enough concern that she seeks medical attention and receives a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s. While her husband and children offer support, the film powerfully depicts how Alice's condition progressively unravels her life, with a palpable impact on her family. The portrayal of the children’s varied reactions to the illness is particularly well done, notably through the complex relationship between Alice and her daughter Lydia (Kristen Stewart), which serves as a significant measure of their understanding of the situation under Richard Glatzer's direction. One scene stands out where she devises an escape plan for herself, highlighting the immense challenge faced by someone whose life has always depended on intellectual capabilities that are gradually fading, making reason increasingly unclear.
