A Pittsburgh hairdresser indulging in a self-centered lifestyle finds herself marked by stigmata—the wounds of Christ—which prompts the Vatican to dispatch an investigator (Gabriel Byrne) to look into it. "Stigmata," released in 1999, blends elements of Christian mystery and horror, sharing similarities with films like "Eye of the Beholder" from the same year and “The Seventh Sign” (1988), while also echoing the feel of "End of Days" (1999). However, it’s more focused on dramatic storytelling than the action elements found in that other film. It reminded me a bit of "The Mothman Prophecies" (2002), but where “Mothman” succeeded through its subtle atmosphere, “Stigmata” occasionally feels like it pushes things too far, maybe to grab the attention of viewers who have trouble concentrating. Still, director Rupert Wainwright is skilled at creating a visually appealing and stylish movie. The straightforward yet meaningful message presented near the end elevates the film, and I completely share that sentiment. The running time is 1 hour and 43 minutes. GRADE: B+/A
