The story centers around a young girl who finds herself isolated and needing to conceal from sinister entities within her family’s house. Her parents reappear, and then a fight starts in an attempt to protect their daughter. It's concerning that the film’s distributors chose not to release it in theaters, so Stephanie ended up seeing it only on home formats. While it wasn’t really the kind of movie that needed a theatrical showing—or even a must-see horror film—it’s still disappointing because it is a well-crafted little thriller. The atmosphere is effectively established from the beginning, as Shree Crooks (as Stephanie) goes through her everyday routine alone in the house with just a stuffed turtle for company. There's an unsettling feeling present, a sense that something terrible is about to unfold. Dark shadows and supernatural events strengthen the "child fearing danger" tone, while details around the house offer clues regarding how the young girl came to be in this situation. With the arrival of the parents, additional odd occurrences and recurring symbols emerge, providing subtle suggestions as to what has transpired. Director Akiva Goldsman does a commendable job given the apparent budgetary constraints, producing some decent horror scenes while keeping tension high within a story involving just three characters. There are a couple of unresolved plot points that are interesting but also frustrating, and opinions on how things conclude have caused disagreement (as is often the case with horror). Still, it’s worth watching for those who enjoy horror mysteries and are willing to accept its unconventional approach. 6.5/10
